The Seattle Times was my employer from November 1996 until November 2000. The entire news and classifieds sites underwent a major revamp in the summer of 2001, and so, what you see here is representative of one section of the news site as it stood prior to the launch of the new one. The Summer 2000 Olympics was a typical project. Page types were defined in coordination with a New Media producer who worked closely with the newsroom. Graphic treatments were agreed to in accordance with our site standards, and were required to fit into the overall "look and feel," with some latitude for the designer, who worked closely with the newsroom graphic artists in order to incorporate graphics and photography from the print coverage into the Olympics site. |

A section of a typical Bio page. Athletes featured were either Washington residents, or had some strong connection to the region. Each athlete's name was linked to an individual bio page with a photo showing them "in action." |
While much of the content was published dynamically as part of the routine updating of the site, the nature and length of the event required daily updates to portions of the site such as the photo galleries. I devised a design for the galleries which would be easy to navigate and easily updated by any member of the design group. Images were collected from the Photo Editor, batch processed and an updated gallery was posted each morning, usually within twenty minutes of receipt of the photos. The newsroom artists had created some outstanding info-graphics. 2000 saw the introduction of some "new" sports into the Olympics. A sub-section was created to better take advantage of the info-graphics, and highlight key distinctions and criteria used to judge each sport. |

![]() A sample of one day's photo gallery index page. Clicking on a link or photo would take the user to a larger image (limited to 48K in file size,) which gave them the option to go through the photos sequentially, return to that day's index, or return to the main gallery index.
