NWjobspace.com was The Seattle Times Company's classified employment site until the launch of a revised site in summer, 2001. I have provided a few screen captures from the former site. The process of building the employment site was a long one. For any newspaper, the core revenue generating engine is advertising. For Metro papers like the Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the core-of-the-core is classified advertising. Therefore, a lot of thought and research was incumbent upon the senior staff prior to the design and build-out of nwjobspace.com. We followed the Product Development Cycle model, gathering requirements for users as well as stakeholders in The Seattle Times Company, making extensive use of prototyping prior to putting a clickable prototype in front of users for testing. |

One of our findings was that our users wanted at least one page that followed the print product model; with the newspaper classifications clearly broken out. [fig. 1] Testing pre- and post-launch also revealed that our users wanted a dense presentation of information. I determined that so-called "liquid" html would allow for that density, providing the additional benefit of maximizing the display, regardless of the user's monitor resolution. Additional options for contacting the employers and getting a full text version of employers' ads were provided. [fig. 2, 3] |
